My Hair Styling Evolution

I have to admit that when it came to styling my hair, I was no bueno. As a matter of fact, styling my hair was my least favorite part of getting ready. I actually have a funny hair #storytime from Middle School.

So, I was in my own world standing outside the school waiting for my sister and brother. We used to walk home together, usually always chatting but this day my sister was pissed! I knew I had something to do with it because she wouldn’t speak to me. But I had no idea what I had done, and finally, she yells it to me: BRUSH YOUR HAIR!! 😅 My poor sister was being bullied because of my crazy hair. And to be honest, looking back. It was completely unacceptable for me to wake up, brush my teeth, shower, get dressed, put lipgloss on and walk out the door. All these steps, and brushing my hair was not one of them?! After that day, my sister started to brush my hair into a ponytail every morning #bigsistergoals. Eventually, I learned a few basic tween/teen style techniques like wetting it every day and soaking it with mouse and gel. However, it wasn’t until a few years ago that I became more comfortable styling my hair.

First, I taught my self how to blow dry my hair than the girls. After that, I began to learn to use new styling tools and even colored my own hair once. Fast forward to today, I’m very comfortable. And I have to admit that I even enjoy styling hair. Talk about evolving!

The Benefits?

  1. The main benefit of heatless hairstyles is to prevent breakage.
  2. By wrapping or twisting your hair, you are distributing the oils in your scalp which helps keep your hair looking shiny and healthy!
  3. These techniques extend the life of your hairstyle. By wrapping your hair, you are removing the constant friction of your hair against the pillow which not only breaks your hair but also messes up your hairstyle.

Tips For Heatless Hairstyling

One of the best ways to help your hair preserve its health and prevent damage is to avoid heat styling your hair. However, this does not mean that you have to look a hot mess. Instead of heat, you can style your hair with one of these 3 easy heatless hairstyling techniques that I will be sharing with you.

Furthermore, before I begin sharing the techniques I want to share a few tips to help you achieve great results. First, I recommend that you use hair products that are meant to address your hair needs. Currently, I am on a repairing stage. Therefore, I use products like It’s A 10 Potion 10 Miracle Repair line, my favorite product is the Miracle Repair Mask. Another great tip is to do one of the magic potions in these posts HERE and HERE weekly which helps repair and grow your hair faster. By taking care of your hair, you are helping it look and feel its best. The results will be manageable and silky locks.

Secondly, It might be necessary to do some pre-heat-styling prior to doing these techniques. It really depends on your hair type or the results that you are trying to achieve. Or you might want to do the techniques while the hair is a little damp and using styling products. That being said, these techniques are still cutting down your style time. And preventing hair damage from styling tools. Thirdly, dont forget that practice makes perfect. These 3 easy heatless hairstyling techniques will become more and more easy to do as you do them. There are so many ways to modify these techniques so make it your own and have fun.

3 Easy Heatless Hairstyling Techniques You Can Do In Minutes!

3 Easy Heatless Hairstyling Techniques

Easy Hairstyling Technique #1: The Tubi

Tubis is my go-to hairstyling technique to get smooth straight hair without the flat iron. It also helps extend my hairstyles as well as prevent more damage.

What is a Tubi or Doobie?

In my country, the Dominican Republic it’s called a tubi and everyone swears by it. And it’s a Heatless hair styling technique, basically, it’s wrapping your hair around your head.

How to do a tubi:

  1. Brush or comb your hair to be tangle-free.
  2. Part your hair from the crown to the nape of your neck.
  3. Start wrapping the hair on the left side of the part in a clockwise manner.  Be sure to smooth the hair as you go.
  4. Secure it with bobby pins along the way.
  5. Cover the Tubi/Doobie with a cap and, if you used bobby pins to secure the hair, carefully remove these through the cap openings.

The tubi can be done at any time of the day, whenever you need a smoothing boost on your hair. That beign said I love doing it before bed.

Easy Hairstyling Technique #2: Anchoas

Anchoas are my go-to hairstyling technique to give my hair a beautiful bouncy curl or wave without a curling iron.

What is Anchoas or mini chignon twist?

Anchoas is another hairstyling technique I learned in the Dominican Republic. It’s a heatless hair styling technique in which you wrap small sections of hair using your fingers.

How To Do Anchoas

  1. Start at the top of your hair by wrapping each lock of hair around your index and middle finger. The smaller the lock of hair the tighter the curl.
  2. Pin each curl into place using a pin. work in small sections until you reach the base.
  3. At this point, you can cover the head with a sleeping cap. Or allow hair to set as is (usually 40 minutes) and then finish off with some hairspray.
This is how overnight anchoas look on my hair.

Easy Hairstyling Technique #3: The High Pony Twist

This technique is so easy, you’ll be mad if you didn’t know it until now. It’s an excellent technique to get some volume on the top of the head and prevent flat hair.

What is The High Pony Twist?

The name, which I just made up right now describes what it is. A high loose ponytail, with the hair, flipped in or out for extra volume.

How To Do The High Pony Twist:

  1. Start by brushing your hair up into a ponytail. Loosely tie the hair using a silk hair scrunchie.
  2. Wrap the whole ponytail around your finger to create a big curl.
  3. Using 2 bobby pins to secure the curl against the scalp.
  4. Let time work it’s magic and the results should be bouncy voluminous hair.
