sick days self-care tips

Being sick makes life a whole different level of “tough.” And if you’re the main caregiver of the family, no one gives a shit! Just kidding, they do, but do they know how to help make you feel better other than by leaving you alone?

Now, don’t get me wrong—I have a great partner who lets me throw in the towel while he steps in to care for us all. But as a mom, I’ve learned that taking care of myself when I’m sick isn’t just about rest (though that’s key!)—it’s about having the right self-care essentials on hand to make recovery quicker and more manageable.

And no, these tips aren’t just for moms; I just happen to be one, so that’s the lens I’m writing from. Here’s what I swear by to survive those sick days when I cannot afford to be down for the count (plus a few little extras that lift my mood)!

1. Vicks Vapor Rub: The OG Sick-Days Fix

sick days self-care tips

First things first: Vicks Vapor Rub. This stuff is like my childhood in a jar. A little on the chest, a dab under the nose, and I can finally breathe again. And let’s not forget the magic of rubbing it on your feet and slipping on some socks before bed. It seriously makes those late-night coughing fits so much better.

Why It’s a Lifesaver: The menthol is like a breath of fresh air, clearing out those stuffy sinuses. Plus, it brings back all the cozy mom-cared-for vibes, which is exactly what I need when I’m feeling sick.

2. Vicks Personal Steam Inhaler: My Mini Spa Moment

A Mom’s Sick Days Made Easy: 6 Self-Care Tips I Swear By

Okay, so let me tell you how I came across this lifesaver of a tool. I ordered a face steamer on Amazon, but they sent me the Vicks Personal Steam Inhaler instead. I was rightfully pissed and was about to return it, but then something told me to look into it first. I did and decided I should keep it, and let me tell you, it’s a must.

It’s so simple to use the Vicks Personal Steam Inhaler: Add water and breathe in that lovely, warm steam—bonus points if you use the menthol pads. Honestly, it’s like a spa treatment in the middle of the chaos, a 10-minute break to clear my sinuses and feel a little human again.

Why It’s Awesome: It’s quick, easy, and portable. It doesn’t involve chasing down a tissue every five minutes or making the whole room feel humid. Sick-day spa? Yes, please!

3. Neti Pot: The Ultimate Sinus Rinse

A Mom’s Sick Days Made Easy

Okay, hear me out. The neti pot might look a little weird (it’s basically a tiny teapot for your nose), and the idea of purposely flushing water through my nose sounded like torture. But this thing WORKS. It clears out all that gross congestion and leaves you feeling way less stuffy.

Here’s what you do: fill it with warm (not hot) distilled water and mix in some saline solution. Then, just tilt your head to the side over the sink, stick the spout in one nostril, and let the water flow through. It’s super weird at first, but you’ll feel the gunk clear out and breathe so much easier after. Just go slow, and remember to breathe through your mouth—it’s way less awkward after the first try.

Why It’s Worth It: It’s all-natural and perfect for clearing sinuses without medication.

4. Black Seed Oil: The Immunity MVP

 6 Self-Care Tips I Swear By

Black seed oil is my go-to for removing excess mucus and phlegm from the body, and I need it to boost my immune system. It’s packed with good-for-you stuff like antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, and it’s one of those supplements that you will reap great benefits from if taken regularly, not just when sick.

Make a shot for your health

Make a shot for your health: When sick, I take a spoonful of black seed oil, a tbsp of honey, 4-6 drops of oregano oil, a pinch of Himalayan salt, and half a lemon and let it work its magic.

Why It’s Awesome: It’s like your immune system’s BFF. Plus, it’s a natural remedy that has been around for centuries, so you know it’s the real deal.

5. Oregano Oil: Nature’s Superhero

How to use Oregano oil

Oregano oil is no joke when it comes to fighting off colds, and this stuff is potent! It’s like nature’s own antibiotic. I usually take it in a shot form ( recipe shared above) when I’m feeling under the weather, and it helps me feel better faster.

Why It’s Awesome: This stuff is powerful. It’s full of antiviral and antibacterial goodness, which means it’s great for kicking colds to the curb before they get worse. A mom-life must-have.

6. DIY Immune-Boosting Tea: My Secret Sip

DIY Immune Boosting Tea

Mamaniña (my grandma) taught me so many recipes way before Pinterest was a thing. I still remember the first time I saw her making this tea and adding an onion, yuck I thought! Who the heck is drinking that?! Silly young Steff, today it is one of my favorites and I like to make it for my family and friends whenever they’re sick.

It’s surprisingly delicious and very good for you. Whenever you need a little comfort and something warm to sip, whip up my mamaniñas’ DIY immune-boosting tea. It’s cozy, spicy, and loaded with ingredients that help you fight off those nasty germs.

Here’s the Recipe:

  • 1 Apple (cut into wedges)
  • 2-3 Cinnamon stick
  • 1/2 red onion (sliced)
  • 5-6 cloves
  • A few anise stars
  • Fresh ginger (about an inch, sliced)
  • A whole lime or lemon
  • Manuka honey

Just simmer it all in water for about 20-30 minutes, strain it, add some honey for added benefits and better taste, and sip your way to feeling better. Trust me, it’s delicious and works wonders!

Why It’s Awesome: This tea is packed with immune-boosting ingredients like red onion and ginger, plus it’s super comforting when you’re feeling icky.

Bonus Tips For Sick Days Self-Care

Wash Your Hair, Feel Better Instantly

self-care tips

I tend to get a lot of tension headaches when sick, and washing my hair is one of the little things that always helps me feel relief and lifts my mood. More recently, I discovered the perfect shampoo and conditioner for that: the Pureology Hydrate line.

Moreover, I love the scent of both, especially the conditioner, thanks to the refreshing, cooling sensation it gives me. It is a lifesaver when I have a tension headache. Plus, the fragrance notes of Mint and Menthol instantly brighten my mood. And let’s not forget how silky smooth it leaves my hair feeling. Something about feeling fresh and clean makes me feel human again, even when I’m under the weather.

Bonus Feel-Good Tip:

I wish I could soak in a hot bath, but a girl currently has a ridiculously oversized shower! Instead, I do a foot soak. It’s quick, and even though it’s not a full-body bath, it still helps me unwind. Add some Epsom salts and a few drops of lavender essential oil, and it’s a mini moment of bliss.

Don’t Skip Skincare (Even When You Feel Blah)

Don’t Skip Skincare

I get it—when you’re sick, skincare is the last thing on your mind. But trust me, your skin will thank you later if you don’t completely ignore it. Never mind the 10-step routines; instead, I just wash and moisturize. I opt for hydrating and soothing formulas that don’t take much effort but still help my skin out when it’s looking dry and dull (which it always does when I’m sick). A little hydration goes a long way!

I love the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Cleanser and Caudalie Premier Cru The Creme.

Don’t Forget the Power of Food

 the Power of Food

While we’re on the topic of self-care, please don’t underestimate the power of food. One of my favorite immune-boosting Anti-inflammatory Vegetable Turmeric Soups is the one I discovered while doing the elimination diet. It’s loaded with anti-inflammatory foods like olive oil, fresh veggies, and turmeric—all of which support your immune system. When I’m not feeling my best, I lean into this way of eating, which always helps me feel more vital and energized. Plus, it’s delicious, so it’s a win-win!
