Finding My Mom Jeans

My quest to find the perfect vintage style fit jeans, better known as ‘Mom” jeans are full of ups and downs.

A lot more downs than up but none the less it’s been a real quest.

The truth is that my husband hates them and finds them unflattering on me. It’s something that he makes very clear every time I wear a pair.

To be fair he’s not too off from the truth, in fact, most of the styles I wore in the past, now looking back were utterly awful.

Finding the right fit on any jeans is tough, but I found it even more challenging to find a great “mom’ jeans.

Determined to find the right pair of “mom” jeans I bought the Levis 501, HERE always out of stock.

All the prior research, AKA Pinterest boards, all agree that this style is a must-have.

When they arrived, I was so happy and loved how they looked, except for the waist area that never fits appropriately on most jeans.

Still feeling confident I wore them to a daytime game date, I wore it with a bodysuit top, and I  thought I looked great but my husband did not agree.

Not going to lie, it hurt, and that was not the reaction I was expecting, I thought he, like me, would love and appreciate a good vintage fit.

In my feelings now I decided to ignore the critic and kept rocking my jeans every chance I got.

It wasn’t until my daughter, very gently told me that my mom jeans needed some adjusting.

This time I decided to take a better look in the mirror, and turns out, they were both right.

Usually, this is when I give up on a trend/style and move on, but the truth is that I want these jeans to work for me.

Mom Jeans Must Fit Right

The beauty of “mom” jeans is that they feel great, I feel confident with them on.

However, because the waist was so big on me, they looked bad.

I took them to the tailor, which I should have done from the beginning, a week later my jeans came back, and I was anxious to try them on.

Guys, the difference was noted instantly, and I want to kick myself for not getting them tailored sooner.

It also made me realize that for the first time I cared enough about a pair of jeans, that I would get them tailored.

I need to get the length adjusted next, and that will take them to the next level.

My recommendations to anyone would be to get your jeans tailored.

How To Style Mom Jeans

Ultimately wear them with whatever top you usually wear your jeans.

One tip that should be followed with this style is to fully or half-tuck in your shirts.

This simple adjustment will make all the difference.

To accentuate my curves more, I like to pair mine with crop tops, bodysuits or fitted tops.

Anything too loose or bulky makes me look a mess.

Here are five styles that I tend to go for when I style my mom jeans.

1. Olive + Oak Travis – White sweater top

2. Free People Runaway Bodysuit

3. Missguided Cream Horn Button Bodysuit

4. Asos Design Body Suit

5. Boohoo Twist Front Crop Top

The shoes you wear them with is also essential and depends on the fit around your legs.

I love sneakers with ripped styles and ankle length boots with frayed bottoms.
