How to Care for Your Skin After Wounds (and Prevent Scars!)

Okay, so let’s talk about something none of us love dealing with wounds. Whether it’s from surgeries (yep, I’ve had a few) or the occasional mishap with a DIY beauty treatment—like, say, burning your skin with salicylic acid while trying to remove a Keratosis pilaris bump (guilty as charged)—taking care of your skin is critical to avoiding those annoying scars. Here’s what I’ve learned through my little adventures in wound care.

1. Clean It Up, But Gently

tips for burns and wound care

First things first, you have to keep that wound clean. Use a mild cleanser like the Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Foaming Cleanser or Dove fragrance-free soap and warm water. There is no need to scrub, gently wash away dirt or bacteria. If you’re dealing with a fresh wound, pat it dry with a clean towel; don’t rub. Seriously, be a friend to your skin!

2. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!

You know how we all swear by our favorite face creams? Well, your wound needs some love, too. Keeping it moist helps prevent scabbing, which can lead to scars. My go-to is a fragrance-free, non-irritating ointment like Aquaphor.

For an all-natural option, fresh aloe vera leaf is fantastic for healing and moisturizing. Just cut open a leaf and apply the gel directly to the wound. It’s soothing and helps speed up healing.

Another favorite healing balm to prevent scars I recommend is the Cicaplast Balm B5 slather, a thin layer on the wound to keep it hydrated. Trust me, your skin will thank you later.

3. Cover It Up

This is where those little band-aids come in handy! Cover your wound with a bandage to protect it from dirt and bacteria. It also keeps moisture in and helps protect it from the sun. Change the bandage daily or whenever it gets dirty or wet.

I tend to use skin-tone band-aids for more discreet coverage, but yes, I totally prefer ones with fun designs because why not?

4. Leave It Alone!

Ladies and gentlemen, this is a biggie: do not pick at your wound! I know it’s tempting when it starts to scab but resist the urge. Picking can make the wound worse and increase the chances of scarring. Let it heal on its own, even if it’s driving you crazy.

5. Sun Protection is Your BFF

Once your wound has healed, if it is on a part of your body that gets exposed to the sun, make sure you’re slathering on sunscreen—SPF 30 or higher. Sun exposure can darken scars and make them more noticeable, so cover up or stay in the shade whenever possible.

I love the EltaMD UV Stick because it’s easy to apply and reapply while on the go.

6. Consider Silicone Sheets

Silicone sheets can be a game-changer if you’re worried about scarring. They help flatten and soften scars over time. Stick one on after your wound has closed up and healed, and wear it for several hours daily. It’s not instant, but with patience, you’ll see results.

7. Be Patient

I know, I know, easier said than done, but wounds take time to heal, and scars take longer to fade. Don’t stress if you don’t see instant results. Just keep taking care of your skin; with time, things will improve. If you’re worried about a wound not healing correctly, chat with a dermatologist for more advice.

So there you have it—my guide to keeping those scars at bay. Whether recovering from surgery or a little skincare mishap, these tips will help your skin heal beautifully. Let’s take care of ourselves, inside and out. 💖
